The Andaman & Nicobar Islands lost a highly cherished musical voice with the passing of Ashok Kumar, fondly known as the rare ‘Voice of Mukesh’. His demise on 11 April, 2026 marked the end of an era for music lovers across the Islands, leaving behind a deep void in the cultural landscape. Though weeks have passed, his absence continues to be deeply felt, and his memory remains alive in the hearts of countless admirers.
A devoted and ardent follower of the legendary singer Mukesh Ji, Ashok Kumar carved a special place in the hearts of audiences through his soulful renditions. His singing carried the depth, pathos and simplicity that defined Mukesh’s timeless voice, earning him admiration and affection from islanders of all generations.
Ashok Kumar was more than an artiste, he was an emotion for those who grew up listening to the golden era of Hindi film music. His voice had the rare ability to recreate the magic of classics, allowing listeners to relive memories associated with the evergreen melodies of Indian cinema.
He was also a passionate fan of Kishore Kumar, reflecting his deep appreciation for the golden age of playback singing. However, his musical journey took a defining turn when he was introduced to Mukesh Ji’s songs through the cultural platform Indradhanush Sangeet Sangatthan, founded in 1989. He was closely associated with the organisation, where his growth as a Mukesh devotee and singer began to flourish. This association shaped his artistic identity, eventually making him a popular and prominent voice throughout the Islands. Over the years, he became a familiar and beloved figure at musical gatherings, tribute shows and community events.
Even weeks after his passing, the sense of loss remains profound among the Islands’ cultural fraternity and music lovers. Tributes and fond recollections continue to be shared by fellow artistes, admirers and well-wishers, remembering him not only as a gifted and dedicated artiste but also as a humble and warm-hearted human being. He was known as a gentle and approachable individual whose presence brought joy to those around him. His voice, often described as soothing and evocative, had the rare ability to comfort and connect people.
As a tribute to his remarkable contribution to the music of these Islands, a special musical evening titled “Jaane Chale Jaate Hain Kahan” is being organized on 20 June, 2026 at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Auditorium, Sri Vijaya Puram. The programme will feature the immortal songs of Mukesh Ji, presented by fellow artistes in fond remembrance of Ashok Kumar. The show is open to all without any entry restrictions, and the organisers have invited all admirers and well-wishers as well as the general public to attend, pay heartfelt homage to the beautiful departed soul, and make the evening memorable with their presence.
Ashok Kumar’s voice may have fallen silent, but the melodies he sang continue to echo in the hearts of the people of these Islands.
