New Delhi: In a major relief to millions of Central Government employees and pensioners, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has firmly put an end to speculations regarding the discontinuation of the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). According to an official communication dated Thursday June 4, 2026, as, the government clarified that there is absolutely no proposal under consideration to replace or phase out the long-standing contributory healthcare scheme in favor of private insurance-based mechanisms.

Clarification Sparks Relief for Pensioners: The official clarification came in response to a representation filed on January 18, 2026, by Md. Saj Hussain, General Secretary of the All India Pensioners Association of EPFO. The association had raised serious apprehensions regarding the potential implementation of insurance-based frameworks like the “Paripoorna Medicclaim Ayush Bima” and how they might impact existing CGHS benefits for serving employees and retirees.

Addressing these anxieties head-on, Unni Krishnan T., Under Secretary to the Government of India, issued a definitive statement: “No proposal to discontinue or replace CGHS with any insurance based mechanism is presently under consideration. It is clarified that any initiative involving insurance models would be supplementary in nature and shall not affect the existing entitlements of CGHS beneficiaries.”
What This Means for Beneficiaries

Status Quo Maintained: The existing benefits, medical coverages, and wellness center facilities under CGHS will remain completely unaffected.

Insurance is Optional/Supplementary: Any introduction of insurance models by the government in the future will only serve as an extra layer of support rather than a replacement.

Security for Pensioners: Central Government retirees drawing pensions from Civil Estimates can breathe a sigh of relief knowing their lifelong healthcare entitlements are secure.

This timely response from the Ministry’s CGHS-III Section effectively defuses growing anxieties within the government workforce, ensuring that the foundational healthcare safety net remains robust and unchanged.
