Port Blair: The South Andaman Forest Division has stepped up its vigil against the illegal possession and movement of forest produce, seizing 0.116 cubic metres of Padauk sawn timber and furniture during a routine patrol in the Maccapahad revenue area near the BSNL Tower.

The seizure was made around 10 am on August 22, when Beat staff of the Garacharama Range detected Padauk timber and furniture stored in a premises/work shed belonging to S. Ramakrishna, a resident of Junglighat.

During the enquiry, the person concerned reportedly failed to produce valid documents or bills to establish lawful possession of the Padauk timber and furniture. The matter was subsequently reported to the Range Officer, Garacharama Range.

Acting on the report, the Range Officer, accompanied by the Assistant Conservator of Forests, South Andaman Division, visited and inspected the spot. The timber and furniture were subsequently seized following due procedure in the presence of independent witnesses. The seized material was transported to the Garacharama Range Office and placed in safe custody, while the person concerned was brought to the Range Office for further enquiry and investigation.

The Forest Department is now probing the source and legality of the timber, besides examining other relevant aspects of the case. Further action will be initiated under the applicable laws based on the findings of the investigation.

The Forest Division has appealed to residents to remain vigilant and extend cooperation in protecting the Islands’ forests and wildlife. Citizens have been urged to report information concerning the illegal hunting, possession, transportation, storage or trade of forest and wildlife produce. Information can be shared with the Forest Department through its helpline at 03192-255228. The department has assured that the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential.
