Barbados: The cricketing world has lost one of its brightest and most enduring legends. Sir Garfield Sobers, universally hailed as the greatest all-rounder the game has ever produced, passed away at the age of 89, bringing to a close an extraordinary chapter in cricket history that inspired generations across the globe. The legendary cricketer died peacefully on July 17, 2026, at his home in Highgate Gardens, St. Michael, Barbados.
Born in Barbados on July 28, 1936, Sobers redefined excellence with his rare ability to dominate every facet of the game. A majestic left-handed batsman, he was equally lethal as a left-arm fast-medium bowler, orthodox spinner and chinaman bowler, besides being one of the finest fielders of his era. His unmatched versatility set a benchmark that remains unequalled even today.
Making his Test debut for the West Indies at just 17, Sobers went on to play 93 Tests between 1954 and 1974, amassing 8,032 runs at an outstanding average of 57.78, including 26 centuries, while claiming 235 wickets and 109 catches. His unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958 stood as the highest individual Test score for 36 years, while his feat of smashing six sixes in an over in first-class cricket in 1968 remains one of the sport’s most iconic achievements.
Knighted for his services to cricket in 1975, Sobers was later named a National Hero of Barbados and inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.
