New Jersey (USA): Spain captured their second FIFA World Cup title with a hard-fought 1-0 extra-time victory over defending champions Argentina, as Ferran Torres struck the decisive goal in the 106th minute after a dominant Spanish display.
Teen sensation Lamine Yamal was at the heart of Spain’s attacking play throughout the final, constantly troubling the Argentine defence with his pace, dribbling and incisive runs. Although he was denied a goal, his relentless creativity kept Argentina under sustained pressure and played a key role in Spain’s dominance.
Despite creating a host of chances, Spain were repeatedly frustrated by goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez before the breakthrough arrived when Nico Williams headed Pedro Porro’s cross into the path of Torres, who rifled home the winner.
Argentina’s task became even tougher after Enzo Fernández was sent off in the 93rd minute for a second bookable offence. Reduced to 10 men, the defending champions struggled to respond and failed to register a shot on target until the closing stages of extra time.
The victory denied Argentina a successful title defence and secured Spain’s second World Cup crown after their 2010 triumph. However, the celebrations were marred by ugly scenes after the final whistle as players from both sides became involved in a heated on-field brawl, leading to further disciplinary action.
Spain’s triumph also underscored the success of coach Luis de la Fuente, whose well-drilled side combined attacking flair with defensive discipline to deservedly reclaim football’s biggest prize.
