Port Blair: For residents of Wimberlygunj and adjoining villages, obtaining a driving licence or accessing transport-related services no longer meant a costly and time-consuming trip to government offices. The State Transport Authority (STA), through its latest rural outreach initiative, brought essential services directly to the people’s doorstep while reinforcing the message of safer roads and responsible driving. In a citizen-friendly initiative aimed at making transport services more accessible and promoting road safety, the Transport Department of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration organised an Integrated Road Safety Awareness and Transport Service Outreach Programme at the Panchayat Hall in Wimberlygunj on Tuesday. The programme drew an enthusiastic response from residents of Kanyapuram, Wimberlygunj and Stewartgunj Gram Panchayats, highlighting the growing demand for doorstep delivery of essential government services in rural areas.A key objective of the outreach programme was to spare residents the inconvenience of travelling long distances to transport offices for routine services. By bringing the State Transport Authority’s services closer to the people, the Administration enabled citizens to complete important formalities relating to driving licences and vehicle documentation in a hassle-free manner.During the camp, 56 Learner’s Licences were issued, while several vehicle-related services, including vehicle fitness inspections, transfer of ownership and renewal of driving licences, were successfully facilitated on the spot.Officials also conducted awareness sessions on road safety, stressing the importance of responsible driving, strict adherence to traffic regulations and maintaining valid driving and vehicle documents. Participants were informed about the crucial role that compliance with road safety norms plays in reducing accidents and protecting lives. The encouraging public response underscored both the effectiveness of the outreach model and the increasing awareness among rural communities regarding safe driving practices and legal compliance. By integrating public awareness with doorstep service delivery, the Transport Department reaffirmed its commitment to citizen-centric governance, easier access to STA services and safer roads across the Islands.Buoyed by the success of the Wimberlygunj programme, the Administration is expected to replicate similar outreach camps in other rural and remote parts of the archipelago in the coming months, ensuring that essential transport services reach citizens where they live rather than requiring them to travel long distances to access them.
