Port Blair: With heavy rains and widespread waterlogging putting thousands of stray and community animals at risk, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has appealed to citizens to step forward and protect them during the ongoing monsoon season.
In a public advisory, the Board cautioned that continuous rainfall and flooded surroundings expose street animals to injuries, infections, starvation and other life-threatening conditions, making community support crucial for their survival.
The AWBI has urged people to provide temporary shelter to stray and community animals wherever feasible, shielding them from prolonged exposure to rain. Citizens have also been encouraged to ensure access to clean drinking water, as safe water sources often become scarce or contaminated during heavy downpours.
The Board has further appealed to the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any sick or injured stray animal to the nearest Veterinary Institution so that timely medical treatment can be provided.
In a separate advisory for pet owners, the AWBI has advised against allowing dogs and other pets to roam outdoors during periods of heavy rain, warning that such exposure increases the risk of accidents, infections and other weather-related hazards. Calling for a united humanitarian effort, the Board has sought the active cooperation of Animal Welfare Organisations, volunteers and the general public to safeguard vulnerable animals throughout the monsoon. It emphasised that timely intervention and compassionate public participation can significantly reduce the suffering of stray and community animals during the rainy season.
