Glasgow(UK): Andaman & Nicobar Islands’ star cyclist David Beckham Elkatohchoongo’s campaign in the men’s sprint event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games came to an end after he stopped short of advancing beyond the qualifying round held at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on August 2. Representing India on one of the biggest sporting stages in the Commonwealth, the 22-year-old cyclist clocked 10.488 seconds in the sprint qualifiers to finish 25th among 29 competitors. With only the top-ranked riders progressing to the knockout rounds, Beckham’s campaign concluded at the qualification stage.
Despite the early exit, qualifying to represent India at the Commonwealth Games marks another significant milestone in the young cyclist’s career. Beckham had shot to national prominence after winning the men’s elite sprint gold medal at the 2025 National Games and is widely regarded as one of India’s most promising track sprinters.
The cyclist from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands also drew international attention because of his distinctive name, bestowed on him by his late father, a devoted admirer of former England football captain David Beckham. Though the Glasgow campaign ended sooner than expected, Beckham remains focused on the future and has set his sights on earning a place in India’s squad for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad.
