Rangat: Recurring power failures caused by ageing and defective diesel generators have once again disrupted normal life in parts of Middle Andaman, highlighting the urgent need for modernization of the Islands’ fragile power infrastructure. Power supply in Mayabunder and Tugapur was severely affected after two 1500 KVA DG sets at the Panighat Hiring Power Plant broke down on May 31, creating a shortfall of nearly 800 kW. The crisis forced the Electricity Department to impose rotational power cuts in the affected areas. Following public inconvenience and growing concern, the A&N Administration deputed a special team led by the Director (Power) and Superintending Engineer (Tech) to monitor restoration efforts on the ground.
Though one DG set was briefly revived on June 2, it again developed technical faults within hours. Efforts are also underway to draw additional power from the Kalpong Hydro Electric Project at Diglipur, but frequent line faults are hampering supply.Officials said spare parts have reached the site and repair work is being carried out on a war footing, with power supply expected to normalize by June 5 evening. The continuing crisis has renewed calls for replacement of obsolete generators and strengthening of reliable power infrastructure across the Islands.
