Car Nicobar: In a determined offensive against the illicit liquor trade, the Nicobar District Police dealt a major blow to bootlegging operations in June, registering 10 excise cases, seizing illicit liquor and destroying thousands of litres of fermented wash used for illegal distillation. Stepping up its campaign against the illegal liquor trade, the Nicobar District Police launched an intensive district-wide excise enforcement drive during June 2026, resulting in the registration of 10 excise cases, seizure of illicit liquor and the destruction of a massive quantity of raw material used for illegal distillation.
During the month-long crackdown, police teams seized 84.9 litres of illicit liquor and detected and destroyed 4,545 litres of lehan—the fermented wash used in manufacturing country liquor—before it could be converted into illicit alcohol. The action is expected to significantly disrupt illegal brewing activities and prevent the circulation of spurious liquor that poses a serious threat to public health and safety.
Police said the sustained operations underscore the district force’s resolve to crack down on the manufacture, possession, transportation and sale of illicit liquor through strict enforcement of excise laws. Similar surprise raids and enforcement drives will continue across the district to dismantle illegal liquor networks and bring offenders to justice.
Seeking greater public participation in the fight against bootlegging, the Nicobar District Police has urged citizens to promptly report any information relating to the illegal manufacture, storage, transportation or sale of illicit liquor to the nearest police station or to the Superintendent of Police, the concerned SDPO or SHO. The police have assured that the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential, while credible information leading to successful detection and legal action will be suitably rewarded.
Reiterating its commitment to safeguarding public health and maintaining law and order, the Nicobar District Police appealed to residents to join hands in eliminating the illicit liquor menace and creating a safer, healthier and law-abiding society.
