Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram): A week-long celebration of sporting talent and competitive spirit across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands culminated on National Sports Day, with outstanding athletes and veteran sportspersons being honoured for their achievements and contribution to the sporting arena. Organised by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, A&N Administration, the series of sports competitions was held from August 22 to 29 under the theme ‘Khelega Bharat–Jeetega Bharat’. The initiative was organised to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, celebrated across the country as National Sports Day.
The week-long sporting events concluded with a valedictory function at the TGCE Auditorium on August 29. Winners and outstanding performers from various sports and games competitions were felicitated with medals and trophies in recognition of their achievements, dedication and sporting excellence.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Aditya Sangotra, Director of Education), congratulated the medal winners and urged them to carry forward the true spirit of sportsmanship in the larger interest of the Islands and the nation. A special highlight of the programme was the felicitation of veteran sportspersons for their outstanding lifetime contributions to the field of sports. Mohd. Aslam, Retired DySP ; Joy Pinto, former Block Sports Officer; and Jasmati Devi, Retired Physical Education Teacher, were honoured for their dedicated service and enduring contribution to the promotion of sports in the Islands.
The celebrations reflected the spirit of National Sports Day — honouring sporting excellence, inspiring the younger generation and recognising those who have devoted their lives to nurturing sports and sportspersons.
