Sometimes, the difference between life and death is not measured in minutes, but in the courage to act. When a 43-year-old man collapsed from a sudden cardiac arrest in the middle of a massive traffic jam near Kalady Bridge in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, most commuters could do little but watch. But two women aboard a nearby KSRTC bus chose not to remain silent spectators.
Staff nurse Anjali Baiju and nursing student Ardra Raj sprang into action without a moment’s hesitation. Realising the gravity of the situation, they got off the bus, raced through the gridlocked traffic and reached the stranded vehicle where the unconscious man, identified as Sinoj, was fighting for his life.
Drawing on their professional training and remarkable presence of mind, the duo immediately began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), refusing to give up despite the chaotic surroundings. Their timely intervention kept Sinoj alive until emergency medical personnel arrived and took over.
Sinoj was later rushed to hospital, where he underwent emergency angioplasty. Doctors say his survival was made possible largely because CPR was started without delay. He is now recovering.
The inspiring act has drawn widespread admiration, with many hailing Anjali and Ardra as true heroes whose compassion, courage and selfless sense of duty transformed an ordinary commute into an extraordinary life-saving mission. Their actions serve as a powerful reminder that humanity shines brightest when people choose to step forward in another person’s darkest hour.
