As June finally drew to a close, it left behind a rich legacy of melodies, memories and milestones that resonated across cultures and continents. The month stood out as a rare confluence of the birth anniversaries of some of India’s greatest musical legends and the worldwide celebration of World Music Day, making it a memorable chapter for music lovers everywhere. The month witnessed the birth anniversaries of three iconic personalities whose contributions have profoundly shaped Indian music.

Admirers celebrated the unforgettable voice of the versatile S. P. Balasubrahmanyam on June 4, paid tribute to the multifaceted genius of Hemant Kumar on June 16, and honoured the timeless musical brilliance of the legendary R. D. Burman on June 27. Though each belonged to a different era and carved a distinct musical identity, their extraordinary body of work continues to inspire generations of musicians and listeners alike.

The celebrations reached a global crescendo with World Music Day on June 21. Originating in France in 1982 as Fête de la Musique, the occasion has grown into an international celebration of music’s unparalleled ability to unite people beyond the barriers of language, geography and culture. Conceived with the simple yet powerful idea of encouraging both amateur and professional musicians to perform freely in public spaces, the movement is now observed in well over a hundred countries.

This year, France once again embraced the festival’s original spirit as streets, parks and public squares came alive with free performances, community concerts and musical gatherings, reaffirming the belief that music belongs to everyone.
India, too, marked the occasion with great enthusiasm. Concerts, tribute performances, music workshops, community singing sessions and cultural programmes brought together renowned artistes, emerging talent and music enthusiasts across the country. The French Institute in India and the Alliance Française network collaborated with local artistes and cultural organisations to organise Fête de la Musique celebrations in several cities, while music academies, educational institutions and cultural bodies showcased India’s rich musical heritage alongside global traditions. These celebrations once again highlighted music’s extraordinary power to transcend boundaries and bring people together.

The birth anniversaries of these legendary musicians, coupled with the observance of World Music Day, underscored music’s enduring ability to transcend time, cultures and generations. As June now becomes a cherished memory, it leaves behind a powerful reminder that great music continues to inspire, comfort and unite millions across the world.(Authored by Asheesh Poddar)
