Port Blair: In a major push towards women’s economic empowerment and self-reliance, the State Hub for Empowerment of Women (SHEW) concluded a week-long series of awareness, entrepreneurship and skill development programmes, equipping women with practical knowledge on health, sustainable livelihoods and income-generating opportunities.
The State Hub for Empowerment of Women (SHEW), under the Department of Social Welfare, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, successfully conducted a week-long series of awareness and skill development programmes from June 15 to 20, 2026, aimed at promoting women’s entrepreneurship, economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods across South Andaman.
The campaign began with awareness sessions on June 15 and 19 at Buniyadabad Community Hall and Bhatubasti Anganwadi-2, highlighting the importance of reducing household oil consumption by 10 per cent as a step towards healthier living. On June 17, SHEW organized an awareness programme at Bhatubasti on various Government schemes and subsidies available for women-led enterprises. The session encouraged aspiring women entrepreneurs to leverage financial assistance and welfare initiatives to establish and expand their businesses.
As part of its efforts to strengthen women’s economic independence, SHEW also conducted a two-day hands-on training programme on ‘Preparation of Virgin Coconut Oil for Women Entrepreneurs’ on June 18 and 19 at ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram. The participants received practical training under the guidance of Dr. Pooja Kapoor, Subject Matter Specialist (Home Science), ICAR-KVK, South Andaman. Smti. Pinkey Kumari, Training and Research Specialist, SHEW, highlighted the commercial potential of virgin coconut oil production and urged participants to make effective use of Government schemes designed for women entrepreneurs.
