Mayabunder: As large parts of North and Middle Andaman continue to grapple with the aftermath of recent torrential rains and flooding, ANTCC Campaign Committee Chairman G. Bhasker undertook a three-day extensive tour of the worst-affected areas from Kadamtala to Mayabunder, meeting distressed families and assessing the scale of devastation on the ground. Walking through waterlogged villages, inundated homes and damaged localities, Bhasker interacted directly with flood-affected residents who narrated their ordeal of loss, displacement and disruption caused by the heavy downpour. He assured the affected families that the Congress party stands firmly with them and would actively pursue their concerns with the administration and relevant authorities.

During his visit, Bhasker held detailed discussions with the Assistant Commissioner of Rangat regarding the urgent need for relief and rehabilitation measures. Stressing that many families have suffered significant losses, he called for speedy assessment of damages, prompt disbursal of compensation and immediate assistance to help victims rebuild their lives. “The suffering of the people cannot be ignored. Every affected household must receive timely support and adequate relief,” Bhasker said while interacting with local residents.

Apart from reviewing the immediate flood situation, Bhasker also raised concerns over the recurring nature of flood-related disasters in several parts of North and Middle Andaman. He emphasized that temporary solutions alone would not address the problem and urged the administration to formulate a comprehensive long-term flood management strategy. He advocated strengthening drainage infrastructure, restoring and improving natural water channels, and undertaking sustainable engineering measures to reduce the vulnerability of villages and settlements during periods of intense rainfall.

Throughout the three-day tour, Bhasker met Panchayati Raj Institution representatives, community leaders and local residents across multiple flood-affected areas. The interactions provided firsthand insights into the challenges faced by communities and highlighted the pressing need for both immediate relief and durable infrastructure improvements. According to our reporter, Bhasker also had a meeting with the party functionaries and others in Diglipur during the visit.

The visit comes at a time when many residents in the region are still recovering from the impact of the recent floods, with growing calls for stronger disaster preparedness and preventive measures to safeguard lives and livelihoods in the future.
