Diglipur: A routine journey home from school turned into a terrifying ordeal for dozens of children when a State Transport Service (STS) bus carrying students overturned in the Kishorinagar No. 4 area of North Andaman on Wednesday afternoon, leaving several of them injured, some reportedly seriously.
According to the information available, the accident occurred sometimes in the afternoon when the STS bus, travelling from Mohanpura to Kishorinagar, allegedly went out of the driver’s control and overturned on the roadside. The impact threw the vehicle into chaos, trapping several children inside the damaged bus.
Hearing cries for help, local residents rushed to the accident site and, along with police personnel and rescue teams, launched an immediate rescue operation. The trapped students were pulled out of the overturned vehicle and shifted to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Diglipur, where doctors and medical staff attended to the injured on priority.
While local sources said several students sustained serious injuries, the district administration had not officially confirmed the number of injured or the extent of casualties till the filing of this report. Medical teams continued treatment as authorities monitored the condition of the victims.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver lost control of the bus, though the circumstances leading to the mishap are yet to be established.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over the safety and roadworthiness of ageing STS buses operating in North and Middle Andaman. Residents have demanded a comprehensive probe into the accident, including the vehicle’s maintenance records, and called upon the State Transport Services to strengthen safety measures to prevent such tragedies.
