Port Blair: A 14-year wait for justice finally came to an end as the Additional District & Sessions Court at Sri Vijaya Puram sentenced a man to life imprisonment for setting a person ablaze in a gruesome domestic dispute that claimed the victim’s life in 2012.
The court, by its judgment delivered on July 29, convicted Amit Kumar Tirkey, a resident of Quarry Basti, Namunaghar, in connection with FIR No. 111/2012 registered at Ograbraj Police Station under Section 302 of the IPC. On July 30, the court awarded him rigorous imprisonment for life and imposed a fine of ₹50,000, directing that the amount be paid to the victim’s son as compensation.
The case stemmed from a tragic incident on August 1, 2012, in which the victim suffered fatal burn injuries after being deliberately set on fire during a domestic dispute. The conviction followed a painstaking investigation led by Inspector Sahil Shamsuddin, who meticulously gathered scientific, oral and documentary evidence. The prosecution successfully established the accused’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt, leading to his conviction and sentencing.
Describing the verdict as a reaffirmation of the justice delivery system, the Andaman & Nicobar Police stated that the case demonstrates that even after years, offenders cannot evade the reach of law. The police also urged citizens to resolve disputes through lawful means and continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies.
The judgment stands as a powerful reminder that while justice may sometimes be delayed, it is not denied, and those responsible for heinous crimes will ultimately be brought to account.
