New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday reviewed the quality and maintenance status of National Highway projects covering 8,512 km in Andhra Pradesh and 3,748 km in West Bengal.
The review was based on feedback received through media reports and social media platforms. The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra, senior officials of the Ministry, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL), and project contractors.
During the meeting, Gadkari stressed the need for faster on-ground execution of projects, stronger quality monitoring systems and wider adoption of modern construction practices to improve road durability, riding comfort and connectivity.
He also emphasised the use of advanced technologies for developing sustainable and efficient highway infrastructure that supports economic growth and enhances commuter convenience.
With the monsoon season approaching, the minister directed officials to ensure comprehensive preparedness measures, including proper drainage management, slope protection works and quick-response systems to minimise disruptions and enhance road safety.
The review covered several aspects of highway quality and maintenance, including retaining walls, safety audits, road signage, plantation and landscaping, precast construction techniques, rectification of accident-prone black spots, expansion joints, project termini planning and compliance with material quality standards.
Gadkari instructed all stakeholders to implement corrective measures promptly and ensure strict adherence to prescribed quality norms for highway construction and maintenance.
