Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram): The demand for regular health check-ups of municipal workers has emerged as a key concern of the INTUC Federation, with its delegation seeking quarterly medical camps for workers during a meeting with the Secretary, Municipal Council, and the Chairperson of the Municipal Council. The delegation, led by INTUC Federation National President Swaminath Jaiswal, held detailed discussions on various issues concerning municipal workers and their welfare. The delegation included National Senior Vice President Dr Rajesh Garhia, National Vice President G Bhasker, State President K.P. Usman, among others.

The delegation specifically urged the Municipal authorities to organise medical camps once every three months, citing the need for regular health monitoring of workers. The Secretary, Municipal Council, assured the delegation that the demand would be positively considered.

Earlier, the INTUC Federation, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, held a State-Level Workers’ Conference at Ranchi Association Hall on September 26, bringing together workers from the Chatham Saw Mill, DSS, APWD, Municipal Council and other government departments.

The conference, chaired by veteran trade union leader Hamid Ali and led by K.P. Usman, focused on workers’ issues, trade union representation and strengthening the organisation’s presence across the Islands.

Swaminath Jaiswal attended as chief guest, while Dr Rajesh Garhia and G Bhasker were the guests of honour. The leaders addressed the gathering on challenges confronting workers and stressed the need for stronger and more effective trade union representation.

A major organisational thrust of the conference was the revival and strengthening of the INTUC movement in the Islands, including efforts to re-affiliate departmental unions that were historically associated with the Congress-affiliated trade union movement. The conference resolved to intensify organisational activities across the Islands, expand the reach of the INTUC Federation and take up workers’ grievances more effectively with the concerned authorities.
