Port Blair(Sri Vijaya Puram): For the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, air connectivity is not merely a convenience—it is the lifeline to the mainland and a critical link for healthcare, education, business, tourism and emergencies. Yet inadequate flight frequencies, high airfares and limited inter-island connectivity continue to impose a heavy burden on Islanders. These concerns figured prominently when Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dinesh Sharma met Union Civil Aviation Minister K. R. Naidu in New Delhi and pressed for priority intervention to strengthen the Islands’ aviation network.

The LG sought more flights to the Islands, affordable airfares, restoration of international air services and introduction of inter-island seaplane services, addressing some of the long-standing connectivity gaps faced by the territory.

For Islanders, the issue of airfare is particularly critical. With no road or rail link to the mainland, air travel remains the principal fast connection between the Islands and the rest of the country. Steep fares and limited flight options can make travel prohibitive for ordinary families, particularly when trips are undertaken for medical treatment, education, employment or other unavoidable purposes.

The absence of direct international air services is another missed connectivity opportunity. Located strategically close to Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, the Islands could potentially serve as an important aviation gateway to Southeast Asia, while improved international connectivity could also support tourism, trade and investment.

Equally important is inter-island air connectivity. For residents of remote and far-flung islands, travelling to Sri Vijaya Puram can itself involve considerable time, cost and logistical difficulties. A viable seaplane network could provide a faster alternative, particularly for islands not adequately served by conventional transport.

The proposals therefore go beyond increasing flight numbers; they call for a more accessible, affordable and diversified aviation network suited to the Islands’ unique geography.

The Union Minister assured the Lieutenant Governor that the proposals would be examined seriously and necessary action taken at the earliest.

The immediate challenge now is to translate that assurance into a time-bound aviation roadmap—covering flight capacity, fare affordability, international connectivity and inter-island services—so that air connectivity becomes an enabler of development rather than a continuing constraint for the people of the Islands.
