Port Blair: A high-speed road accident at Port Mout in South Andaman early on Wednesday left five persons, including four tourists and their driver, seriously injured after a Maruti Ertiga allegedly lost control, rammed into a parked vehicle and crashed through a boundary wall.

According to an information available, the accident occurred at around 4 am, when the speeding Ertiga reportedly veered off the road and slammed into a stationary vehicle parked outside a residence. The impact was so powerful that both vehicles were badly damaged, while the boundary wall was breached. Debris, including bumpers and number plates, was strewn across the road.

Residents, awakened by the loud crash, rushed to the spot and found the Ertiga overturned with two tourist couples and the driver trapped inside. The injured, unable to move due to the severity of their injuries, were pulled out by locals, who shifted the four tourists to a nearby medical facility in a private vehicle before police and an ambulance reached the scene. The injured driver was later taken to hospital by ambulance.

Preliminary accounts from local residents indicate that overspeeding may have led to the accident. However, the nearby Ograbraj police have registered a case and launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause and sequence of events.
