Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram): Taking cancer screening closer to communities beyond the reach of regular healthcare facilities, Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dinesh Sharma on Saturday flagged off two Mobile Medical Vans equipped to provide screening services across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The initiative, jointly undertaken by the SBI Foundation and Ashray Foundation, will run for three years, with a special focus on remote and inaccessible areas where access to timely screening and early diagnosis remains a challenge. The mobile units are equipped with doctors, paramedical personnel and essential medicines to provide screening services and promote awareness about cancer.

In a parallel initiative to address safety concerns among fishing communities, protective equipment was distributed to fishers under a joint programme of the SBI Foundation and Dakshin Foundation. The intervention aims to reduce risks associated with human-crocodile conflict and enhance the safety of those dependent on coastal waters for their livelihoods.

The programmes seek to address two critical concerns facing island communities — access to preventive healthcare and occupational safety — through sustained interventions.
