LG puts civic, health and tourism needs under scanner; seeks time-bound action on people’s issues

Niel Island (Shaheed Dweep): Residents of thi put a range of pressing local issues directly before Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dinesh Sharma during a Jan Samvad, prompting him to direct the concerned departments to examine the demands under the prescribed rules and ensure time-bound action.

Among the key issues raised were the availability of an ambulance, timely supply of fertilisers for vegetable cultivation, repair of rural roads and construction of a new Community Centre—issues closely linked to healthcare, livelihoods and basic infrastructure on the island.

Following the interaction, Dr. Sharma held a review meeting with the concerned officers and directed them to act on the issues raised during the Jan Samvad and keep him informed of the action taken.

The Lt. Governor also met separate delegations of the BJP and Congress, who raised issues concerning the development of Shaheed Dweep and the welfare of its residents. Assuring the political representatives of continued access to the administration, Dr. Sharma said the “doors of Lok Niwas will always remain open” for them to bring matters concerning Islanders to his notice.

The Jan Samvad formed a key component of Dr. Sharma’s two-day visit to Shaheed Dweep, during which he also inspected the Primary Health Centre, police station and educational facilities and interacted with residents and officials.

Earlier, the visit began with a cleanliness drive at Bharatpur Beach under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign and World Tourism Day observance. Dr. Sharma administered the Swachhata pledge and urged residents and visitors to keep the island clean and environmentally sustainable.

At the Primary Health Centre, the Lt. Governor inspected the diagnostic laboratory, dispensary and wards and directed timely repairs, better cleanliness and early completion of the under-construction 10-bedded ward. He also took note of the requirement for an ultrasound machine and night ship service, directing the Health Department to examine the issues.

At the Anganwadi Centre and Government Senior Secondary School, Dr. Sharma interacted with children, mothers and teachers, stressing quality education, punctuality, continuous learning and preservation of local culture and values. He also called for a concrete action plan to improve education in the Islands.

Inspecting the Shaheed Dweep Police Station, the Lt. Governor directed regular patrolling, intensified action against drug abuse and illegal trafficking by foreigners, and adequate assistance and security for tourists.
