Katchal (Nicobars): The disruption of regular shipping services has once again exposed the vulnerability of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ remote communities, with Katchal Island facing an acute disruption in domestic LPG supplies and the Administration being compelled to seek the Indian Navy’s intervention to prevent the situation from worsening.
The Andaman and Nicobar Administration on Saturday confirmed that the supply of domestic LPG cylinders to Katchal has been temporarily affected due to unavoidable logistical constraints and the non-availability of regular shipping arrangements. The disruption has inconvenienced residents, underscoring the dependence of far-flung islands on a reliable maritime lifeline for essential commodities.
Acknowledging the hardships faced by the islanders, the Administration said restoring LPG supplies is its top priority and that alternative transportation arrangements are being explored to replenish stocks without further delay.In an emergency measure, the Administration has sought the assistance of the Indian Navy to transport filled domestic LPG cylinders to Katchal. A Naval vessel is expected to sail from Sri Vijaya Puram, preferably within the next six days, carrying the much-needed cylinders to meet the island’s immediate requirements.
The Administration appealed to residents to extend their cooperation during the temporary disruption and assured that all possible efforts are underway to normalize LPG supplies at the earliest. The latest disruption has once again brought into focus the recurring challenges posed by irregular shipping services in the archipelago, where any interruption in connectivity can quickly escalate into a crisis affecting the supply of essential commodities and the everyday lives of thousands of islanders.
