Port Blair: In a significant step towards modernising public transport and promoting digital governance, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has introduced a QR code-based cashless fare collection system in Administration-operated STS buses, making fare payments faster, safer and more convenient for commuters.

Launched in the first phase at the STS Bus Terminus in Sri Vijaya Puram, the initiative enables passengers to pay bus fares instantly by scanning QR codes carried by bus conductors using any UPI-enabled mobile application.

According to a report, the digital payment facility has been introduced to provide commuters with a secure and hassle-free alternative to cash transactions while reducing dependence on physical currency. The system also eliminates the need for passengers to carry exact change, thereby cutting transaction time and facilitating quicker boarding.

As per the officials, the initiative forms part of the Administration’s broader drive to embrace technology-driven, citizen-centric governance and improve the efficiency of public transport services across the Union Territory. The Department said the QR code-based system is expected to enhance transparency in fare collection by minimising cash handling and promoting secure electronic transactions. It will also help streamline operational processes through a standardised digital payment mechanism.

The cashless payment facility is expected to benefit a wide spectrum of commuters, including daily passengers, students and tourists, by offering a convenient payment option that supports faster ticketing and a smoother travel experience. The QR code-based fare collection system marks the beginning of the Administration’s phased rollout of digital payment solutions across STS bus services as part of its ongoing efforts to modernise public transport infrastructure and further improve commuter convenience.
