Port Blair: In a bid to curb the growing challenge of electronic waste and promote responsible disposal practices, the Andaman and Nicobar Pollution Control Committee (ANPCC) on Sunday launched an extensive awareness drive on the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, urging businesses and institutions to ensure strict compliance with environmental norms. The awareness programme, held at the Department of Science & Technology Conference Hall in Dollygunj, brought together proprietors of electronic and electrical shops, retailers, repair and service centres, hoteliers, bulk consumers and other stakeholders.ANPCC officials sensitised participants on their legal responsibilities, including proper segregation, safe storage, documentation and disposal of e-waste only through authorised producers, refurbishers and recyclers. They also highlighted the unique challenges faced in the islands, where e-waste has to be transported to authorised recycling facilities on the mainland under prescribed regulatory procedures. The session covered key aspects such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), transportation protocols, inventory maintenance and the environmental and health hazards arising from improper disposal of electronic waste. Officials also announced the launch of a Union Territory-wide e-waste inventorisation exercise in compliance with the directions of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the National Green Tribunal (NGT). An online data collection form, developed by an intern from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT), was demonstrated and will soon be circulated among bulk consumers and waste generators. The interactive programme concluded with ANPCC appealing to all stakeholders to adopt environmentally responsible e-waste management practices and contribute towards a cleaner and more sustainable Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
