Summer Book Fest inspires young minds, reinforces reading culture in the Islands

Port Blair: Celebrating the joy of reading and the transformative power of books, the Summer Book Fest 2026 concluded on a high note with a valedictory and prize distribution ceremony at the State Library, bringing together hundreds of young readers who showcased their literary talent, creativity and passion for learning.

Organised by the Education Department, the week-long festival served as a vibrant platform to nurture reading habits among students while encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, communication skills and creativity. More than 300 students from schools across the islands enthusiastically participated in a variety of engaging competitions and interactive activities aimed at making learning both enjoyable and meaningful.

Director of Education Aditya Sangotra, who attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest, distributed prizes to the winners and interacted with the students. Stressing the importance of books and libraries in shaping young minds, he narrated an inspiring story on how access to knowledge can transform lives and empower individuals to overcome challenges.

Describing libraries as gateways to lifelong learning, Sangotra urged students to cultivate the habit of regular reading and make productive use of their time. He also encouraged them to reduce excessive dependence on mobile phones and spend more time exploring books and library resources.

Addressing the gathering, Archana Singh, Nodal Officer of the State Library, congratulated the participants and winners, appreciating the enthusiasm and dedication displayed throughout the festival.

Adding a memorable touch to the concluding ceremony, Master Krithvik Vihaan of Mahatma Gandhi International School captivated the audience with a rhyme highlighting the importance of libraries and their role in making knowledge accessible to readers of all ages.

The successful conclusion of the Summer Book Fest once again underscored the vital role of libraries in fostering a culture of reading and lifelong learning among the younger generation in the Islands.
